I have reason to believe my computer may have been infected with the Netsky virus.
To be on the safe side, you should download
the repair tool from Symantec. This thing is really making the rounds (most
of the CS department at Pitt seems to be infected), so make sure you run your virus
scanner periodically.
[Update: My home computer is clean, but my work computer may be infected. – Funky]

Apple isn’t a brand. It’s a religion. 😉
Getting a Mac to avoid a virus is a lot like amputating an arm to avoid carpal tunnel syndrome. 😉
Hmm, if a Mac were an arm, that means that stuff that you pick up with that arm may not be able to be picked up by other arms due to compatibility issues. (Wouldn’t that look silly? Let’s kick this idea around in the fine tradition of the Curt Jester…)
If an arm were a Mac, every time you try to set something down, somewhere in your visual field, a little box saying “Are you sure?” would pop up, and until you hit “OK” or “Cancel” by some effort of will, your arm would just freeze. That’d be funny. Eventually I’d get annoyed and get the hacksaw in my garage (yes, I’m sure I want to do that )…but I’d be amused at first.
No, just all the games with that arm will be in a one to two year time warp. 😉
No, noooo, getting a Mac is like gaining an arm. 😉
Oh, fear not, I am just as opposed to Mac nuts as I am to religious nuts. (I’ve even read articles online by some of the more thoughtful Mac nuts who compare their views to religious views.)
I’ve been using Macs for about five years now, and I’ve never had more or less trouble with transferring files between computers than I ever did when I worked exclusively with Windows. Which is to say I had problems moving files even Windows-to-Windows sometimes.
For the most part, though, I still find the Mac OS X (which is only very slightly similar to the “classic Mac OS,” and really a whole new breed) to be a far smoother experience than Windows.
Plus, I just like the Mac aesthetic better than the Windows one. For instance, and this is a minor issue, but important to me, when I bought my current iBook, it came out of the box pristine and white, with nary a sticker on it. (Honestly, what’s the point of those “Intel Inside” stickers?)
Or, you could use a Mac and never get infected with anything. 😉
Replace my arm with a Mac? I guess I won’t be playing too many games with that arm. 😉
Uh-oh… somebody is operating under outdated assumptions about the Mac platform…
Well, emailing files to myself after opening them on a Mac machine led to some interesting issues when I was working on my BPhil thesis, so I’m just reporting what I experienced a couple years ago. If they got better since then, good for them.
But seriously, I don’t mind Macs. I really don’t feel strongly about one computer or another–I definitely disliked Windows, as Funky could attest. However, the biggest use I have for Macs is how fanatical their devotees can get. Speaking of that BPhil, my advisor was a big Mac nut. I enjoyed getting a rise out of him.
Well, when people regularly wear shirts etc. that have prominent logos on them, an Intel sticker is modesty indeed.
I’m personally quite happy to advertise logos on my shirt…for a price. I definitely won’t pay for the privilege of getting a shirt with a large Nike logo on it.
